" I was curious about HCL gear so I asked their German distributor if I could test their microphone "Faust".

He brought the mic into my studio and I set up 2 Neumanns (M147 & U87ai) to test against Faust.

My studio partner and I recorded different speakers and singers and the results were really amazing.

Faust was the overall winner in these tests.

We were really impressed of the transparent and airy sound of this microphone. It sounds much clearer and stronger than the Neumanns. In a simple word: it sounds true !

The great thing about Faust is, that the sound it provides is "absolutely right", you don`t need further eq`s or exciters, only a little compression and it sounds perfect.

Because of these results I decided to buy this microphone immediately. It really does enrich my studio !

I just can say: WOW!

I was testing it for a few hours, first checking the instrument inputs with the guitar, amazing! transparent, clean, but solid and with a full body.        Then I used the line inputs as a stereo pair, using an insert from the master channels. I matched the levels for a/b comparison at exact volume between master out and master out with possessed inserted...Then I felt in love with the possesed!: the bass is more solid and the high end more defined and clean, also the stereo field is about 40cm wider (from my listener position). Man, this box is a lot more than a normal DI box!                                                                        I was using the DI with Bass yesterday, great! the combination of the DI + Demeter Compressor is really killer for bass!                                                           Also I used it for recording a rhodes and processing synth pads in the song I`m working now, it really get life to synths...

In line it give me great presence, a sort of clearly sweetness (thanks to the tubes), real good stereoimage and with my bass, it's fantastic! And I like the design, with the grids which make it possible to see the lit tubes, and the old school print:)cool!...

Your boxes are rather good anyway ;-)... I like the way how the overtones unfold when the tubes are pushed hard...how much "headroom" I get additionally in the region where the circuit adds just 2nd harmonics, while already overloading/behaving nonlinear. At first I thought that the kickdrum (the audio example I sent) would be audibly clipped...but then again, before the arrival of transistors,preamps did NOT have pads to lower the input sensitivity...and in the days of old,a U87 on a low tom did not need a pad on a tube-input...and today a pad is needed for any transistor/OPamp channel.The short version: tubes sound better on mic inputs when the signals are very percussive and dynamic. Fact...
